Humanitarian Engineering

Purpose

This was my first project working with the Frugal Innovation Hub(FIH) at SCU as a UX Designer.

The FIH needed a website to provide information and resources about Humanitarian Engineering, a task force that has done humanitarian work all over the world.

Project Overview

  • The Humanitarian Engineering Taskforce is lacking a website that shows current projects and accomplishments. They also do not have an avenue to invite other faculty to collaborate on new and upcoming projects.

  • Design a website that shows current information and developments on Humanitarian Engineering projects. Create a way for faculty to submit projects or proposals. Deliver product by deadline in June 2024, to present at the IAJES Summit in India.

  • As the only designer on the team, I was fully in charge of the design and user experience. From creating wireframes and iterating on the Figma, aligning with teams in Santa Clara, Boston, and internationally for feedback was a top priority.

To Filter or Not to Filter?

    • Because there is so much content and information provided on this website, figuring out how we want users to be able to find specific content was essential.

    • As a team, we had to decide which filters are more useful than others for different mediums such as documents and videos, as well as projects.

Pain Points + Solutions

How are Users Submitting Projects?

    • To have projects submitted by different people, would users prefer to have an account linked to their email, or would they rather send their project proposal through email.

    • We had to keep in mind what the developers would be able to accomplish in a short period of time.

    • Having an account creation process as well as a form for submitting proposals would be most effective.

Our Resources are too Cluttered.

    • We realized that there was so much information on the "Resources" page, making it hard for the user to find information quickly.

    • We split the original page into two pages, making it more organized and specific for the user's needs.

Next Steps

During the product design process, there were some features that we wanted to include but could not due to our timeline. Features such as “News”, as well as making more intricate functionalities is part of our Big Picture Version of the website.

Additionally, because this website is being used by people all around the world, having it available in multiple languages in essential. Currently we only have it in Spanish and English, but we plan on expanding this range in our Big Picture Version.

Lastly, we look forward to gaining more projects as well as contributors for the Humanitarian Engineering Taskforce. This website was created in order to facilitate a hub of like minded individuals, and our goal is to present this at the International Association of Jesuit Engineering Schools (IAJES) Summit in June 2024, hosted in India.
