Purpose

This project was the third and final design to complete my Google UX Design Professional Certificate. As a gym enthusiast myself, I wanted to create an app related to all things active.

I called this app Astir, meaning “in a state of excited movement”. My vision for this app was to provide an experience where people of all activity levels are motivated in their daily life, recognizing that there are so many ways to live a healthy lifestyle.

Project Overview

  • The problem Astir is aiming to solve is that when users want to adopt a healthy lifestyle, it often comes with downloading an influx of separate apps that track sleep, meals, and fitness activity. Users also often look for a community to kickstart their fitness journeys, but it is often intimidating or hard to find.

  • Astir's goal is to create a platform that combines elements such as activity trackers, fitness and meal plans, as well as a community space for all users at any part of their fitness journey. Astir aims to foster a safe and inclusive environment for everyone.

  • For this project I was the solo lead designer, creating wireframes and prototypes, as well as conducting user testing and iterating on my designs. I applied the UX design process to this project.

Pain Points + Solutions

  • Lack of Account Features

    • Users preferred to have account creation at the launch of the app, rather than using the app without a profile, especially if wanting to engage in the community feature.

    • Users wanted the option of making their account private, for privacy reasons.

    Solution

    • Account creation at the launch of the app

    • Option to make accont private on settings screen

  • No Connectivity with other Individuals

    • Users wanted to find a way to connect with real people that had similar fitness goals as them or that were in the same area as them.

    Solution

    • Community page where you can swipe right or left to be friends with someone and message them.

    • Community members are able to post content such as new recipes or accomplishments for people to like, comment, or ask questions.

  • Hard to Stay Motivated through the Week

    • Users found that to stay motivated, they would benefit from having goals set.

    Solution

    • Add goal setting options to the account page, not making it mandatory on every user.

    • Goals will be able to be set for elements on the home screen, such as steps, sleeping, or calories burned, etc.

Next Steps

Because this project was part of completing my certificate, I designed the basic layout of the app, but I would definitely like to add more screens to provide a better understanding of the flow.

This is most likely the app that I would actually develop, which makes it all the more exciting, as it is driven by a passion for all things exercise.
